The multi-state lottery game Mega Millions will introduce major updates starting April 5, 2025. The game's base price increases to $5, bringing significant enhancements to player experience and winning potential.

Enhanced jackpots and prizes

Starting jackpots will increase from $20 million to $50 million. Every ticket will include a built-in multiplier - ranging from 2X to 10X - for non-jackpot wins. The multiplier value prints directly on each ticket.

This built-in multiplier feature eliminates the need to purchase separate multiplier options. Players automatically get the chance to multiply their non-jackpot winnings up to ten times the original prize amount.

Better odds in your favor

The Montana Lottery announced that players now have improved odds of winning the jackpot at 1 in 290 million, compared to the previous 1 in 302 million. This improvement comes from reducing the Mega Ball field from 25 to 24 numbers. The white ball field stays at 70 numbers.

The streamlined Mega Ball field creates more winning opportunities while maintaining the game's signature large prizes. These improved odds mean players have a better chance at life-changing wins.

Industry leadership speaks

Joshua Johnston, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium, expects these changes to generate more billion-dollar jackpots and millionaire winners while supporting important causes in participating states.

Johnston said:

We are creating a game that both our existing players and people new to Mega Millions will love and get excited about playing.

The enhanced format aims to attract new players while rewarding loyal participants.

Game schedule and transition

Mega Millions continues its Tuesday and Friday drawings at 9 p.m. MT. The draw-down schedule begins January 10, 2025, with 24 draws remaining before the enhancement launch.

The first drawing under the new format takes place on April 8, 2025. This carefully planned transition ensures a smooth changeover for players and retailers alike.

How to play the enhanced game

Players select five numbers from 1—70 for white balls and one Mega Ball number from 1—24. Computer-generated random selection remains available for those who prefer quick picks. Players can purchase tickets for up to 24 future drawings.

The simplified number field combines with the automatic multiplier to create an engaging player experience. While the core gameplay remains familiar, these enhancements add extra excitement to every ticket.

Price changes in context

This marks a significant price adjustment for Mega Millions, while Powerball has only increased once from $1 to $2 in 2011. The higher price point reflects the game's enhanced features, improved odds, and larger starting jackpots.

The price increase enables Mega Millions to offer more substantial prizes at all levels, creating more opportunities for life-changing wins. The built-in multiplier ensures every ticket has maximum winning potential.
