Claiming Prizes

Here's the normal process for claiming prizes in Tennessee.

Prizes of $600 or Less

Option 1.
Sign your ticket and claim your prize at any participating retailer or lottery district office.
Option 2.
Mail your signed winning ticket and a filled out claim form to the Lottery’s headquarters in Nashville.

Prizes between $601 and $199,999

Option 1.
Sign your ticket and claim your prize at any Tennessee Lottery office.
Option2.
Mail your signed winning ticket and a filled out claim form to the Lottery’s headquarters in Nashville.

Prizes of $200,000 or Over

Any prize of $200,000 or more must be claimed at the Lottery’s headquarters in Nashville. Remember to sign your ticket.

1. When should I claim my prize?

You have 180 days from the date of the draw to collect your winnings.


2. Will I get my prize the day I claim it?

Prizes of less than $600 can be claimed on the same day at any participating retailer. Prizes ranging from $600 to $199,999 must be claimed at a Tennessee Lottery office, and prizes of more than $200,000 must be claimed at the Lottery headquarters in Nashville. Prizes can also be claimed by mailing your winning ticket to a lottery office, please allow time for delivery and processing.


3. Must I sign my lottery ticket?

Yes. If your ticket is lost or stolen and you haven’t signed it, you may not be able to claim it as your own.


4. Can I buy Tennessee Lottery tickets over the phone, by mail, or online?

Due to strict regulations, the state of Tennessee does not currently sell lottery tickets over the phone, by mail, or online. Tickets can be purchased in person at any authorized retailer.


5. Do I have to pay taxes on my prizes?

Yes. All lottery prizes in Tennessee are subject to federal income taxes and some are subject to federal tax withholdings as well.

Furthermore, the Tennessee Lottery reports all winnings of $600 or more to the Internal Revenue Service. Winners of prizes of $600 or over are required to report their winnings on tax returns and present a Social Security Number when claiming their winnings.

Lottery winnings in Tennessee are not subject to state income tax. Federal income taxes must still be paid however, and certain prizes will have a percentage withheld during payout. Check our Tax Information section for more details.


6. Can anyone play the Tennessee Lottery?

Anyone who is 18 years of age or older can play the Tennessee Lottery.


7. What lottery games can I play in Tennessee?

No, the Tennessee Lottery reserves the right to release your identity, city of residence, and details of your win.

It may be possible to claim your prize through a trust in order to retain your anonymity however, so we recommend that you consult with a legal professional or financial advisor before claiming any big lottery prizes.


9. Can I purchase lottery tickets for more than 1 draw at a time?

Yes, you can purchase as many tickets as you like for a certain number of draws in advance. See our Advanced Draws section for more information.


10. Where does the lottery money go?

The Tennessee Lottery dedicates proceeds from the sale of tickets to educational funding in the state including scholarships, grants, and initiatives such as Tennessee Promise.
