FAQS

When should I claim my prize?

You have 180 days from the date of the draw to collect your winnings.

Will I get my prize the day I claim it?

Prizes between $1 and $599 can be claimed and received on the same day at any Texas Lottery Retailer provided they have funds available. Prizes between $600 and $2,500,000 can be claimed at your local claim center during normal hours. Prizes up to $2.5 million can also be claimed by mail. Allow four to six weeks for claims to be processed.

You must make an appointment at the Lottery Commission in Austin for all annuities and prizes over $2,500,000.

Before claiming any big lottery prize, we recommend that you consult with a legal professional or financial advisor as they can help you during the claim process.

Should I sign my lottery ticket?

Yes. If your ticket is lost, damaged, or stolen and you haven’t signed it, you may not be able to claim it as your own.

Can I buy Texas Lottery tickets online, by phone, or mail?

No. State law prohibits online sales as well as the sale of tickets by mail or phone.

Do I have to pay taxes on my prizes?

Yes. Lottery winnings in Texas are not subject to state income tax, but they are subject to federal income tax. The Texas Lottery has to report any lottery winnings of $600 or over to the IRS, as long as the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the wager.

It is also required by law to withhold a percentage of certain lottery winnings for federal tax purposes. Check our Tax Information section for more details.

Can anyone play the Texas Lottery?

Yes, provided you are 18 years old or older and purchase tickets from a licensed retailer in Texas.

What lottery games can I play in Texas?

The Texas Lottery has a rich portfolio of games, which include Lotto Texas, Texas Two Step, Pick 3 (Morning, Day, Evening, Night), All or Nothing (Morning, Day, Evening, Night), Cash Five, Daily 4 (Morning, Day, Evening, Night), Powerball, and Mega Millions.

Can I keep my identity anonymous if I win?

In Texas, the Anonymity Bill, HB 59, became a law on September 1, 2017. This law allows winners of prizes of $1 million or more to remain anonymous and prohibits all personally identifiable information from being released to the public.

How do I claim my Texas Lottery winnings?

You can claim your winnings at a retailer, through the mail, or by visiting a claim center.

Where does the money from ticket sales go?

Lottery proceeds go toward education and veteran programs in Texas.
