Police raided the Michigan Lottery office in Livonia on Thursday. The sudden closure left prize winners stranded at the door.

Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at the Plymouth Road location on June 26. The MSP Fraud Investigation Section led the operation.

What happened at the Michigan Lottery office?

The search warrant came from an ongoing investigation. The Michigan Lottery referred the case to the state police. MSP has not revealed what they were looking for. Johnny Watkins arrived to claim his prize. He found a locked door and a temporary closure sign. The sign directed visitors to call 844-917-6325 to schedule appointments.

Watkins told CBS News Detroit:

I got here two minutes after 2 p.m., and I had seen the sign on the door. I'm kind of bummed out that that happened.

Dallas Bird owns the Anytime Fitness gym next door. He spotted three unmarked police vehicles outside the building. Bird recalled for CBS, "It seemed like something serious was going down."

Are Michigan Lottery games compromised?

No. Michigan Lottery officials say the games remain secure. Jake Harris, Michigan Lottery spokesperson, issued a statement:

This investigation was initiated by the [Michigan] Lottery and is in no way connected to the integrity of Lottery games.

The lottery started this investigation internally. They then referred it to the Michigan State Police. This suggests the lottery might have discovered potential fraud within its own operations.

What does this mean for players?

Your lottery tickets are still valid. The games continue to operate normally. Only the Livonia office faces temporary closure. Players can still claim prizes at other Michigan Lottery locations. The lottery operates multiple offices across the state.

Why won't the police reveal details?

Active investigations require secrecy. Police protect evidence and witnesses by limiting information release. MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw confirmed the search but provided no specifics. He did not say what investigators seized or who they suspected. The fraud investigation section handles complex financial crimes. Their involvement suggests serious allegations.

When will the office reopen?

The Michigan Lottery has not announced a reopening date. The temporary closure continues while police investigate. Players needing immediate service should call the appointment number or visit other lottery offices.
