Knife pulled in lottery fight over winning ticket

Police say the lottery ticket wasn't the only thing these men had on them. What else turned up during the arrest?

It was anything but a lucky day in Massachusetts. What started as a squabble over a lottery ticket quickly escalated into a full-blown street fight, complete with a knife, drugs, and felony charges.

Police were called to break up the midday mayhem between two Springfield men, but what they uncovered at the scene might just be wilder than the jackpot they were allegedly fighting for.

Lottery ticket fight

Around 1:40 p.m. EST on July 14, 2025, officers responded to Gamache Drive in Ludlow for reports of two men who appeared to be fighting over a lottery ticket, according to the Ludlow Police Department. Reports said both men were in their 40s, and one of them was armed with a knife.

Once at the scene, authorities found that one of the men had a cut on his arm. He was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Ludlow Fire Department. Officials said there were no other injuries at the scene.

Drugs found at the scene

While police claimed the two men were allegedly fighting over a winning lottery ticket, no details were given on that ticket or the winning amount. However, during a preliminary search of the two men, police did find crack cocaine. Officers arrested the two men without incident.

Joel Carrero, 43, of Springfield, was charged with disorderly conduct, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a Class B substance, and carrying a dangerous weapon. Anthony Gonzalez, 48, of Springfield, was charged with disorderly conduct, assault with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a Class B substance.

Both men were arraigned in Palmer District Court and pleaded not guilty, officials said. They were released on $250 cash bail.

National Lottery Day

On July 17, 2018, the Massachusetts Lottery established the first National Lottery Day. This day was created to provide customers and retail partners with a day of special promotions for lottery products, while also celebrating the lottery as a valuable source of local aid in the state since the first ticket was sold in 1972.

In 2019, the Massachusetts Lottery and other state lotteries joined forces to create the first National Lottery Week, which has been taking place this week in 2025.

During this year's National Lottery Week, the Massachusetts Lottery will be using social media to highlight different themes, including winner stories, the lottery's retail partners, responsible gambling, and the support the lottery provides to the state.

In addition, lottery officials announced that starting on July 17 and running through August 20, daily “Summer Words” keywords would be printed on all draw and monitor game tickets. Players can then enter these daily keywords on the lottery's website for a chance to win cash prizes.

This promotion leads up to the Summer Cash Bash event at the lottery's regional office in Worcester on Thursday, August 28. At the Summer Cash Bash event, players can win cash prizes just by attending. Five players will also get the chance to spin the giant wheel for a chance to win up to $100,000 with a minimum prize of $10,000.

Enjoy playing the Massachusetts Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
