Gateway Awards celebrate Florida students winning on and off the field

It was a day of celebration in Florida, as over 350 students were brought together to honor them for balancing sports, leadership, and academic excellence across Duval County. The annual Gateway Conference Awards ceremony brought together student-athletes, coaches, educators, parents, and community leaders in Jacksonville.

The event was hosted by the Florida Lottery and the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, as they honored some of Northeast Florida's top high school student-athletes. The ceremony recognized standout students from 17 Duval County public high schools across 22 different sports. It was all about highlighting their achievements not only on the field and court, but also how they excelled in the classroom and throughout the community.

Keeping their education mission at the forefront

According to Florida Lottery officials, this celebration was about more than athletic success. It was a chance to show that the education mission for the Florida Lottery is still top of mind.

Florida Lottery Acting Secretary Reginald D. Dixon stated:

This celebration goes far beyond athletic performance — it's about recognizing the discipline, commitment, and leadership these student-athletes demonstrate every day. At the Florida Lottery, our mission is to support education and create opportunity for Florida students, and these young leaders embody exactly what that investment is meant to build. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and support their continued journey toward success in school, in sports, and in life.

This event was a chance for the Florida Lottery to reinforce its education-focused mission and shine a light on the state's Bright Futures Scholarship Program. This program was put in place to help students pursue college and career opportunities through academic achievement.

The Florida Lottery launched in 1988. Since that time, it has contributed over $50 billion to education programs in the state.

Lottery officials said they have also helped send over one million students to colleges, universities, and technical schools through Bright Futures scholarships. They also explained the lottery reinvests much of its revenue into Florida’s economy through education funding, retailer commissions, and prize payouts.

NFL players join in on the celebration

For the awards ceremony, the Florida Lottery partnered with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This was a chance for them to emphasize the importance of leadership, perseverance, and teamwork both in sports and everyday life.

Whitney Meyer, the Jaguars' Senior Vice President and Chief Community Impact Officer, was at the ceremony representing the team. She said the students honored during the ceremony represented “the complete package.”

Meyer added:

Their commitment to leadership and excellence sets them apart today and signals a bright future for Jacksonville.

The awards ceremony was also a chance for families, coaches, and school admins to have a chance to celebrate students who are often juggling very hectic schedules, which include practices, games, travel, academics, and community involvement.

The students who were honored at the ceremony were nominated by a coach or school principal. These nominations were based on athletic performance, academic achievement, character, and leadership qualities.

A chance to put a light on academics and athletics

The Gateway Conference Awards have been growing. They are one of the region's largest celebrations of student-athletes.

From the outside, it may look like sports achievements are a major part of the recognition. However, organizers stressed that academic success and community impact are equally important.

For many of the students honored during the night, it served as recognition for years of hard work both inside and outside the classroom. Organizers hope the annual event keeps inspiring young athletes to pursue excellence in all aspects of life while building a stronger future for their schools and communities.
