Sometimes persistence pays off, and this lucky South Carolina Education Lottery player is proof of that!

Terrific Palmetto Cash 5 win

A Chapin lottery player has come very close to winning the Palmetto Cash 5 jackpot in the past. Persistence paid off, as he finally did it, recently purchasing a winning ticket worth $140,000.

After claiming his prize, the lucky man, who chose to remain anonymous, said, “It's terrific.”

The winner told lottery officials that he plays Palmetto Cash 5 every day. While he has come close to winning the jackpot, within one number of winning the grand prize, he has never hit the jackpot — until now!

The winning ticket was for the June 4 drawing. The winning numbers that night were 17, 21, 25, 28, and 38, and the lucky player matched all five numbers to win the $140,000 jackpot.

The lucky winner bought the winning ticket from Circle K, located at 1259 Chapin Rd. in Chapin. For selling the winning ticket, Circle K Stores Inc. #476 will receive a commission of $1,400.

The big win isn't stopping this winner

Even after finally winning that jackpot, the winner told lottery officials he had no plans of stopping. He said he's going to keep playing the game, telling officials:

I have a ticket for tonight.

The Palmetto Cash 5 jackpot for tonight's drawing is $150,000. The odds of winning the jackpot for Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 850,668.

Big year for education in South Carolina also

While the Palmetto Cash 5 jackpot winner is celebrating, students in South Carolina should be celebrating, too. The South Carolina Education Lottery recently announced it raised $592 million for education for Fiscal Year 2024. This is the fourth straight year the state lottery has raised over $500 million.

Since the South Carolina Lottery started in 2002, they have sent a total funding for education of $8.3 billion.

The state lottery's Executive Director, Dolly Garfield, said:

I am incredibly pleased that the Lottery is making a significant contribution to education for the upcoming year. Our streak of $500 million plus transfers to the Education Lottery Account is a testament to the commitment of our entire lottery team, hardworking retailers, loyal players, and the Lottery Board of Commissioners.

Officials said an unprecedented five, multi-state jackpots that topped over a billion dollars and the addition of a new rolling jackpot to the state's own Palmetto Cash 5 game all helped lead to these year-end results.

While education is celebrating, players were celebrating all year long also. In FY 2024, lottery players in the state won more than $1.6 billion in prize money with lottery retailers also earning over $168 million in commissions.

Chairman of the SC Lottery Commission, Sam Litchfield, adds:

On behalf of the Board, we are proud of the Lottery's continued success.  These funds will guarantee that South Carolina is a great place to earn an education, live and work.

Enjoy playing the South Carolina Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
