The big winners were coming out in New York recently, as three $1 million winners made their way to lottery headquarters to claim their huge paychecks!

Second prize Powerball win

Up first, we have Ricky Alessi of St. James, who won the second-tier prize during the May 27 drawing of Powerball. With that win, he was able to claim his $1 million prize with lottery officials.

The winning white ball numbers for that May 27 drawing were 9, 30, 39, 49, and 59, and the Powerball number was 21. The lucky winner matched all five of the winning white ball numbers to win the $1 million prize.

Alessi purchased the winning ticket from Liquorium, located at 430-04 North Country Rd. in St. James.

He recently made his way to lottery headquarters to claim his winnings and he opted for a one-time lump sum payment of $651,000 after the required withholdings.

Big scratch-off winner

Up next, we have Jose Carranza of Mastic, who won the top prize in the Platinum Power scratch-off game, taking home $1 million from the New York State Lottery.

Carranza purchased the top prize-winning ticket from East End Marketing, located at 620 Montauk Hwy. in East Moriches.

After making his way to the New York Lottery Headquarters to claim his winnings, Carranza left with a one-time lump sum payment of $416,641 after the required withholdings.

With Carranza claiming a top prize in the Platinum Power scratch-off game, lottery officials said there is one top prize remaining in the game still needing to be claimed.

Second big scratch-off winner claims their $1 million

The lottery headquarters in New York were quite busy dealing with $1 million winners recently. The next big winner to claim their prize was Sandra Velez of the Bronx, who won the top prize playing the New York State Lottery's $1,000,000 Cashword Bonus scratch-off game.

Velez purchased the winning ticket from 211 Pitt Stop, located at 700 Route 211 East in Middletown.

After bringing her top prize-winning ticket to lottery headquarters, Velez received a one-time lump sum payment of $446,935 after the required withholdings.

With Velez claiming one of the top prizes in the $1,000,000 Cashword Bonus instant game, lottery officials said there are still three $1,000,000 prizes remaining to be claimed.

Powerball and scratch-off sales in New York

While these players are celebrating their big wins, it comes on the heels of many New Yorkers purchasing both Powerball and scratch-off tickets from the state's lottery.

Officials said the Powerball game in New York has generated $576.7 million in total sales during fiscal year 2023-2024. From those lottery sales, officials said school districts in Suffolk County received $273.4 million in Lottery Aid to Education funds during that same period of time.

Meanwhile, the scratch-off games saw way more in sales. For fiscal year 2023-2024, New York's instant ticket games generated $4.37 billion in total sales. From those lottery sales, school districts across the five boroughs received $1.19 billion in Lottery Aid to Education funds during that same period of time.

Enjoy playing the New York Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
