Puyallup Safeway hits jackpot, sells $4.2M winning Lotto ticket

The winning is happening in Puyallup, as a Safeway store recently sold a $4.2 million jackpot-winning ticket for the Lotto draw game, making it the sixth big-winning ticket they've sold since 2019!

The latest jackpot win

September is coming to a close, and this Safeway in Puyallup is ending it with a bang. The store, located at 5616 176th Street E in Puyallup, sold the jackpot-winning ticket for the September 14 drawing.

The winning numbers for that Lotto drawing were 5, 9, 16, 24, 38, and 44. The lucky winner matched all six of the numbers to win the $4.2 million jackpot that night.

For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, the lucky lottery retailer will receive a $42,000 bonus check from the Washington Lottery.

Big wins at Puyallup Safeway

While the store (and the winner) are celebrating this big jackpot win, this isn't the first time the store has celebrated a lottery win.

The Puyallup Safeway has had six big winning tickets of $10,000 or more since 2019. The six wins took place:

  • December 2019 - $50,000 scratcher prize
  • December 2020 - $10,000 Match 4 prize
  • January 2021 - $75,000 scratcher prize
  • January 2022 - $30,000 scratcher prize
  • March 2023 - $50,000 Powerball prize
  • September 2024 - $4.2 million Lotto prize

In addition to these bigger wins, the retailer has also sold three bigger Mega Millions winning tickets, including one worth $1,500 and two worth $2,000, in the last three months!

Melinda Spain, Store Director, told lottery officials:

We were completely surprised when we found out that we had sold the winning ticket, and we are beyond excited to know our store played a part in changing someone's life. We're thrilled for our customer who is taking home such a large prize, and we're already thinking of ways to celebrate.

Lotto — how does it work?

Lotto is a draw game available in the state of Washington. Each ticket costs $1, and players get two plays per ticket. Players select two sets of six numbers between 1 and 49. If they want the computer to generate numbers for them, they can select the Quick Pick option.

There are four prize categories for Lotto, ranging from $3 for matching three of the winning numbers up to the jackpot for matching all six of the winning numbers.

Players can purchase Lotto tickets at any of Washington's lottery retailers throughout the state.

Who benefits from the Washington Lottery?

Besides the lucky winners and those retailers that sold the winning tickets, there are many state programs in Washington that benefit from the state lottery.

Since 1982, the lottery has generated more than $5.3 billion to support these state programs, like the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account (WOPA).

In Fiscal Year 2023 alone, WOPA received $199.9 million from the lottery. WOPA then used $139.1 million of that money to fund the Washington College Grant, a financial aid program that helped support over 29,000 college students and apprentices across the state last year.
