From number patterns to “fortune cookie” picks, theories swirl after two winners also split the $143M jackpot.

When I checked the winning numbers from the Powerball drawing on April 29, 2026, I thought I was seeing an error. I was thinking the Powerball website had been hacked, or someone had screwed up when posting the winners.

However, it was not an error. It was correct information, as not only did two lucky tickets match all of the Powerball winning numbers to split the jackpot, but there were also 89 Match 5 winners across the country. Yes, 89 winners! That definitely brought out the theories and speculation on why so many winners.

A winning kind of night

It was the last drawing of April 2026, and April definitely wanted to go out on a huge note. The Powerball jackpot had climbed to $143 million over the past 10 drawings without any jackpot winners.

However, all of the winners seemed to come out during last night’s drawing. The winning white ball numbers for the April 29 drawing were 3, 19, 35, 51, and 67, and the Powerball number was 15. The Power Play add-on option was 2X.

This is where things get interesting. To start, two tickets matched all of the winning numbers drawn. Those tickets were sold in Indiana and Kansas, so they will split the $143 million jackpot.

Now for the Match 5 winners, 62 tickets matched all five of the white ball numbers to win $1 million. In addition, 27 tickets matched all five of the white ball numbers and included the Power Play option to win $2 million.

Those winning Match 5 tickets were sold here:

  • Match 5 winners: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois (3), Indiana (14), Kansas (5), Kentucky, Louisiana (6), Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska (2), New Jersey (14), Oregon, Pennsylvania (5), and Wisconsin (4).
  • Match 5 + Power Play winners: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana (5), Kansas, Louisiana (5), Mississippi, New Jersey (4), Oregon (3), Pennsylvania (2), Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Wisconsin (2).

Theories behind the wins

When I saw the number of winners, I had to do some research and see if it was true. I came across a Reddit thread where people were commenting on this rare occurrence.

You see, there usually might be a few Match 5 winners. Maybe when the jackpot gets to $1B, there are more winners. However, 89 Match 5 winners in one drawing is rare. According to the Reddit thread, there was a drawing over 20 years ago that had 110 second-tier prize winners.

Now, why all these winners? One theory is that the numbers were on a fortune cookie or popular horoscope prediction, so many played them, and they actually came up.

Another interesting aspect is that each of the winning numbers increases by 16. It goes from 3 to 19 to 35 to 51 and then 67. The Powerball number was 15, so maybe all of those Match 5 winners had 16 for the Powerball number, and we would have had a record-breaking number of winners if it had come up.

No one will truly know why so many players selected these numbers. They may conduct an investigation, since it's so rare, but for now, the winners should just enjoy the money coming their way.

The Powerball jackpot now resets to $20 million for the next drawing, which will take place on Saturday, May 2.

Enjoy playing the lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
