New York Powerball players get a second shot at $10 million

The extra feature, called Double Play, costs just $1 but adds a chance at a separate $10 million top prize.

Powerball players in New York now have another way to chase a life-changing jackpot. The New York Lottery announced the addition of Double Play, a $1 add-on feature that gives Powerball players a second chance to win using the same numbers they selected for the main drawing. The first Double Play drawing will take place on June 3, following its June 2 rollout across the state.

For just an extra dollar per play, players can enter a separate drawing with a top prize of $10 million, creating another opportunity to turn a Powerball ticket into a major payday.

How does Double Play work?

Double Play is available as an optional add-on feature when buying a Powerball ticket. This feature costs $1 to add on, and players who choose it will use the same numbers in both the regular Powerball drawing and the Double Play drawing.

The Double Play drawing takes place about 30 minutes after the main Powerball drawing on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. This means that a single set of numbers could potentially win prizes in both drawings. Double Play offers seven prize levels:

  • 5 + Powerball – $10 million
  • 5 – $500,000
  • 4 + Powerball – $50,000
  • 4  – $500
  • 3 + Powerball – $500
  • 3 – $20
  • 2 + Powerball – $20
  • 1 + Powerball – $10
  • Powerball – $7

Double Play joins Power Play

New York Powerball players now have the option of adding both Double Play and Power Play add-ons to their Powerball tickets.

Like Double Play, Power Play costs an additional $1 per play and multiples non-jackpot Powerball prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X. A Match 5 win with Power Play is always worth $2 million.

Players can choose to add either Power Play or Double Play individually, or purchase both on the same ticket. Pricing options include:

  • Powerball: $2
  • Powerball + Power Play: $3
  • Powerball + Double Play: $3
  • Powerball + Power Play + Double Play: $4

One thing to keep in mind is that the Double Play prizes are not multiplied by the Power Play multiplier.

Summer promotion for the new add-on option

To help celebrate this new launch, the New York Lottery is giving players a special promotion called Power Wednesdays.

Every Wednesday from June 3 through July 29, players who buy an eligible Powerball ticket at a retail location will have a chance to receive a free Powerball ticket with Double Play.

The bonus tickets will be awarded randomly at the time of purchase through the lottery terminals and vending machines.

According to lottery officials, about 650,000 free $3 tickets will be distributed during this promotion. This promotion could provide a significant boost for players interested in trying the new feature without spending any additional money.

What does this mean for players?

Double Play gives New York players another way to maximize a Powerball purchase without buying a completely separate ticket.

While the odds of winning the $10 million top prize remain long (1 in 292.2 million), this new feature does create an additional drawing and another chance for players to see if their numbers come up.

For those players who already add Power Play to their tickets, Double Play gives them another layer of excitement. It also gives them another chance at a multimillion-dollar prize every time Powerball numbers are drawn.

Enjoy playing the New York Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
