One of the last states to launch a lottery in the U.S. was Mississippi. On November 25, 2019, the Mississippi Lottery officially started selling scratch-off tickets. Before the ticket sales became official, lawmakers were arguing about whether or not a state lottery could provide meaningful revenue without expanding gambling too much.

The debate came to an end in 2018 when legislation was passed. This new bill created the Mississippi Lottery Corporation. The goal: to generate funding for infrastructure and education. It's been over six years since that launch, and the lottery has already reached a huge milestone: over $3 billion in total sales. This just goes to show how quickly the program has scaled in a very brief amount of time.

Big returns for the state

With this growth in sales, the Mississippi Lottery has also been able to deliver huge returns to the state. Since the launch in 2019, the state lottery has contributed over $790 million to the state. This money has been given to the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Education Enhancement Fund, which has been used to not only help with road and bridge improvements, but also help with education funding.

The numbers continue to grow. In March 2026, the lottery was able to generate $10.4 million for the state. For the fiscal year-to-date, the lottery has contributed almost $98.7 million. This just goes to show the steady source of public funding the state lottery provides.

In a press release from the Mississippi Lottery Corporation, President Jeff Hewitt stated:

Crossing the $3 billion mark in sales while approaching $800 million back to the state is a significant achievement for the lottery. Every dollar generated helps strengthen communities across our state.

Quickly developing a player base

One of the biggest factors in crossing that $3B mark so quickly has to be the strong player engagement across the state. From the launch, the lottery has focused on offering a mix of instant-win scratch-off tickets and draw-style games. By doing so, it gave players multiple ways to participate.

This attracted both casual players and regular participants, building momentum early on. Over time, the lottery added new games and prize structures, which have helped keep interest high. All of this contributed to consistent sales growth.

The state has also seen the retailers play an important role. Lottery products are now widely available across the state. The accessibility of these tickets, combined with the steady updates on the games, has helped maintain the excitement among players.

The young lottery is making waves

Yes, lotteries in states like New York or Massachusetts have been around for decades. But while the state lottery in Mississippi is still in its early years, its performance so far suggests that newer lotteries can scale quickly when they are supported by strong demand and a clear funding purpose.

The Mississippi Lottery has created a steady stream of revenue, which is already making a visible impact in infrastructure funding, where proceeds from the lottery are helping to support long-term improvement projects.

What's next for players?

With lottery sales continuing to climb and contributions to the state nearing $800 million, the Mississippi Lottery looks to be well-positioned for continued growth. Lottery officials say they need to keep offering a wide variety of games, which will keep players engaged. This is key to sustaining momentum.

As one of the newest lotteries in the country, Mississippi's rapid rise offers a clear example of how quickly a program can evolve in just a few years. Going from a debated idea on the legislative floor to a major funding engine for the state.

Enjoy playing the Mississippi Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
