Winning the National Lottery in the United Kingdom can often be seen as a ticket to a dream life. However, one former jackpot winner had that dream unravel into a nightmare. Anthony Dugard, whose syndicate won £2.2 million in 2009, has now been ruled a pedophile after being convicted of child sex crimes.

The former steelworker, who took home £275,000 from the win, seemed to embrace a life of community involvement after the lotto win. However, a dark secret recently emerged, ending in a four-year prison sentence after a police sting revealed shocking crimes.

The big lotto win

Back in 2009, Dugard, 60, and his wife were part of a syndicate of eight when their numbers came up in a National Lottery draw. Dugard entered the draw with five of his coworkers from a steel firm in the UK.

At the time, Dugard said a “dark cloud” had lifted after the lottery win. He was one of thousands facing job losses because of a lack of work. After winning that £275,000, the Grimsby, in Lincolnshire, man could breathe a sigh of relief.

That relief has now come to an end

While Dugard felt relief at that time, you can say the relief is gone after what has recently happened. Following a police sting, he was convicted of nine child sex offenses and has been sentenced to four years in prison, according to The Daily Mail.

According to police, Dugard traveled to Swindon in July 2024 to meet who he believed was a child with the intention of abusing them. However, he was met by police officers from the South West Regional Organized Crime Unit as part of a sting operation to combat child sex abuse and exploitation.

Officers arrested Dugard, and after searching his cell phone, they discovered more offenses were committed by Dugard against a real child.

Investigators determined the child was only 15 years old when she was abused by Dugard. She was able to provide evidence to police that the man coerced and exploited her over several months.

The former lotto winner was charged and subsequently pleaded guilty to five additional child sexual abuse charges.

Dugard’s sentencing

While a judge was getting ready to sentence Dugard, a personal impact statement was read to the court from the victim’s mother. In it, she said, “It makes me so sad that [she] has been through this and I'm so sorry that I couldn't protect her. The actions of this man have caused me to feel like I have let my daughter down massively, and for that, I am truly sorry,” The Daily Mail reported.

She added, “I am so proud of her and the fact that she has taken the big step of voicing her truths and telling the police what happened to her and take comfort in knowing that she can now find peace and start her healing process, knowing that the wrongs will be righted.”

On Friday, November 22, 2024, Dugard was sentenced to four years in prison. In addition, he will also be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Registry for life and be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 15 years.

“Dugard has caused substantial suffering to the victim and her family, and I thank her for speaking up about his predatory behaviour,” DI David Wells from South West Regional Organized Crime Unit said. “He poses a significant risk to children and I welcome the sentence handed down to him today.”

A life of community development

Prior to the sentencing, Dugard was living a life of community development since his lottery win. Not only did he work as a fire risk assessor, but he also volunteered in helping police and emergency services with the charity, Blue Light Brigade, where he performed home safety checks.

He also worked with counselors to tackle anti-social behavior as chairman of the Park Drive Neighborhood Watch.

Enjoy playing the lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
