The Powerball frenzy is at full tilt as the jackpot skyrockets to a jaw-dropping $1.7 billion, but Kansas players have even more to celebrate than just chasing the big prize. Later this month, a new twist will arrive that gives them another chance to score serious winnings beyond the main drawing.

Already a hit in other states, the Double Play add-on option is finally making its way to Kansas, promising to bring even more excitement and maybe even bigger payouts to every ticket.

Double Play coming to Kansas

Powerball excitement is everywhere right now, as the jackpot grows to $1.7 billion. However, Kansas Lottery players will soon have even more exciting Powerball news to celebrate when the Double Play option becomes available.

The Double Play feature will debut in Kansas starting on September 22. This Double Play option will give Powerball players a chance to win additional prizes, including one up to $10 million.

Kansas Lottery spokesman Cory Thone stated:

Double Play is an add-on feature that gives players in select jurisdictions another chance to match their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million.

How does the Double Play option work?

Double Play is an add-on option for Powerball players. The feature is available in certain states, but for an additional $1, they can cash in on the secondary drawing.

The Double Play drawing immediately follows the main Powerball jackpot drawing. A new set of white balls and Powerball are drawn, with Double Play ticket holders having a chance to win the top prize of $10 million.

This is only an add-on option that will be available to players and is not mandatory. Thone said:

If a player wants to add more chances to win, then this provides that without adjusting the base price of a play of the game. One Powerball ticket remains at just $2.

For those players adding on the Double Play option, the prize breakdown is below:

  • Five white balls and the Powerball – $10 million
  • Five white balls – $500,000
  • Four white balls and the Powerball – $50,000
  • Four white balls – $500
  • Three white balls and the Powerball – $500
  • Three white balls – $20
  • Two white balls and the Powerball – $20
  • One white ball and the Powerball – $10
  • Powerball – $7

Temporary change in multi-draw options

While the Double Play option is currently available in 21 other states across the nation, including all of Kansas’ neighbors, the Kansas Lottery still needs some time to get everything in place for the September 22 debut. Because of that, lottery officials said they would be issuing fewer multi-draw options for players as the September 22 date gets closer. This is to prepare for the imminent change.

However, Thone said once the Double Play feature becomes available, players will again be able to buy up to 15 drawings in advance.

Enjoy playing the Kansas Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
