Jackpot to jail cell: Kentucky's biggest lottery winner arrested again

A huge Powerball jackpot made state lottery history, and now the Kentucky man behind that win is back in jail. James Farthing won $167 million playing Powerball in April 2025. He made state history for that win, but now he is being detained once again. This time, for allegedly intimidating a woman with a suspected gun.

His life quickly changed after matching all of the winning numbers in the multistate lottery game last spring. Now, this arrest is the latest development in a very turbulent period of Farthing's life.

From a record win to repeated arrests

His huge jackpot victory immediately hit the state's news. Farthing and his mother were going to share the big win.

Farthing was caught in Florida a few days after he claimed the award. He was charged with assaulting a policeman. The country took notice of this stunning development.

Farthing first entered a not guilty plea to the accusations. Later, he would ask to serve the time in jail and give up his right to a hearing on probable cause. He was then scheduled to be freed from prison in August 2025.

Less than a year after his historic win, Farthing is now dealing with fresh legal issues.

Authorities say that on February 11, 2026, officers were called to a residence. According to reports, a woman called for assistance after claiming that someone at the house was armed and attempting to harm her.

Police reported finding a gun and marijuana inside the house when they got there.

Text messages and allegations

Investigators said that this woman had been picked up by Farthing for what they described as a prearranged meeting. According to police investigations, the woman later informed them she felt pressured by him to take a "gummy."

Farthing allegedly texted the woman many times while the police were questioning her, one of which said, "Why would you do this to me? Unreal. I'd never hurt you."

Farthing was then taken into custody by the authorities, who accused him of intimidating a participant in the legal process. On April 2, he is expected to appear in court.

A wild ride since the big jackpot win

The $167 million win by Farthing marked a milestone in Kentucky Lottery history. The prize was the biggest ever won in the state, and it briefly placed him among the biggest lottery winners in the country for 2025.

But the public's attention has been heightened by his quick transition from record-breaking winner to repeat defendant. High-profile lottery winners frequently receive a lot of attention, according to legal experts. After unexpected wealth, they can experience personal difficulties as well.

Before winning the lottery, Farthing had a lengthy criminal history. The legal concerns are still developing today, but they are happening more swiftly and in public.

There are still concerns about how the most recent felony accusations would affect the man who previously celebrated one of the largest lottery wins in the state as his April court date draws near.

For the time being, what started as a tale of life-changing events has once again taken a sharp turn. Not in a lottery terminal, but in a courtroom this time.

Enjoy playing the Kentucky Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
