An Illinois woman just became one of the luckiest lottery players in U.S. history. On March 10, 2026, a player known only as 'Lucky Lady' matched all six numbers to win a $536 million Mega Millions jackpot.

She bought her ticket online through the Illinois Lottery's iLottery platform. That makes this the second-largest prize ever won by an online lottery player in the United States. The record was a $552 million Mega Millions jackpot — also won by an Illinois player, also online, back in June 2024.

A ticket that almost wasn't bought

Here's where it gets interesting. 'Lucky Lady' almost didn't play at all.

She had tried to purchase a ticket a week earlier but never finalized the transaction. She later joked to her boss that it simply wasn't meant to go through. When she decided to try again for the March 10 drawing, she chose a Quick Pick, then reshuffled the numbers several times until she spotted her favorite number, 16. That's when she locked it in.

The winning numbers: 16, 21, 30, 35, 65, and Mega Ball 7.

The moment it hit

Even after the confirmation email arrived and the Illinois Lottery app flashed the win, she didn't believe it. She described shaking and repeatedly telling herself it couldn't be real. Her daughter had to call a claim center just to confirm it.

It was real.

What's next for 'Lucky Lady'

She has plans. A new family home with a swimming pool tops the list. A family cruise or a trip to Las Vegas may follow. She has chosen to remain anonymous, a right afforded to winners under Illinois law.

Illinois keeps winning

This is the fifth Mega Millions jackpot won by an Illinois Lottery player in less than five years. The state has quietly built one of the most remarkable jackpot win streaks in the country.

Beyond the winner, Illinois itself benefited. During the jackpot roll period that started December 5, 2025, ticket sales generated more than $13 million for the Common School Fund, which supports K-12 education across the state.

Illinois has a remarkable track record with Mega Millions jackpots. Here are some of the biggest Mega Millions wins in state history:

  • March 10, 2026: $536 million won by 'Lucky Lady' (anonymous, online).
  • March 25, 2025: $344 million won by an anonymous player in Cortland.
  • June 4, 2024: $552 million won by an anonymous player online.
  • July 29, 2022: $1.337 billion won by an anonymous partnership in Des Plaines.
  • August 11, 2017: $393 million won by Patricia Busking of Palos Heights.

Jackpots roll on

Mega Millions draws every Tuesday and Friday. Tickets are $5 each and come with a randomly assigned multiplier, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X, applied to all non-jackpot prizes. The next jackpot stands at an estimated $50 million.

Could Illinois produce a sixth jackpot winner? Based on recent history, don't rule it out.
