In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Stop & Shop in Ansonia donated a $10,000 selling bonus from the Connecticut Lottery Corporation (CLC) to Seymour Pink. The bonus, earned from selling a $1 million winning Powerball ticket, will support the nonprofit's breast cancer awareness efforts.

The donation comes at a crucial time, as October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign aims to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure.

Pounding the Pavement for Pink

The donation bolstered Seymour Pink's 13th annual Pounding the Pavement for Pink 5K. Held on October 5, 2024, in Seymour, Connecticut, the event drew over 2,200 runners and walkers. An additional 1,000 spectators cheered from the sidelines.

This annual event, taking place on the first Saturday of October, unites the community in the fight against breast cancer. It raises crucial funds for research and support programs. The 5K is also a powerful symbol of solidarity, bringing together survivors, families, and supporters in a sea of pink.

A united front against breast cancer

Representatives from Stop & Shop, CLC, and Seymour Pink gathered on stage for a special check presentation. The moment captured the spirit of collaboration in the fight against breast cancer.

The Connecticut Lottery President and CEO Frank Suarez highlighted the partnership:

We are honored to stand with Stop & Shop in support of vital community initiatives such as Seymour Pink. The CT Lottery is proud to assist our retail partners in supporting their communities.

About the organizations

The Connecticut Lottery Corporation (CLC) is a quasi-public state agency that generated $404 million for Connecticut's General Fund in fiscal year 2023. It supports public health, libraries, education, and other state programs. Since 1972, CLC has contributed over $11 billion to the General Fund.

Stop & Shop is a regional grocery chain operating over 400 stores in New York, New England, and New Jersey. With 60,000 associates, the company is committed to charitable initiatives in local communities.

Founded in 2009, Seymour Pink is a nonprofit based in Seymour, Connecticut. It has raised over $3 million for breast cancer research and support. The organization donates to local hospitals, including Yale's Smilow Cancer Institute and Griffin Hospital's Hewitt's Breast Cancer Center.

Nationwide efforts in the fight against breast cancer

Connecticut's initiatives are part of a broader national movement to combat breast cancer through innovative funding and legislative measures. Other states have also stepped up to support breast cancer awareness and research.

In 2006, Illinois launched The Ticket for a Cure, a lottery game designed to raise money for breast cancer research. This initiative has raised over $16.5 million to date. A portion of every dollar spent on these tickets directly supports breast cancer research and support services in Illinois.

These initiatives serve as models for other states, illustrating how governments, businesses, and nonprofits can work together to address critical health issues.
