As families across the country gather for Thanksgiving today, one heartwarming story of gratitude shines bright. A recent breast cancer survivor has a lot to celebrate this holiday season after winning a brand-new 2024 Ford Bronco through the Pennsylvania Lottery’s Keys and Cash Scratch-Off.

Jodie Kavka’s big win is more than just a lucky ticket — it’s a testament to resilience and hope during a challenging year.

A big win at just the right time

This week, officials from the Pennsylvania Lottery presented the Allegheny County woman with the keys to a brand new 2024 Ford Bronco. The presentation ceremony took place at Kenny Ross Ford South, located at 3200 Library Road in Pittsburgh.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving today, Kavka said she had a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

Kavka was out on a shopping trip when she purchased her winning ticket. She was looking for something to drink, so she stopped at GetGO, located at 4000 Monroeville Boulevard in Monroeville.

Kavka told lottery officials, “People were at the drinking fountain, so I put my $5 bill in the lottery machine next to it. I’m so grateful! I’m a recent breast cancer survivor and we were just talking about selling our second car before it breaks down to get some house repairs done.”

Winning the top prize

The Keys and Cash scratch-off ticket went on sale on May 21, 2024. The ticket costs $5 and gives players the opportunity to win the top prize of a 2024 Ford Bronco of their choice or a cash option of $100,000.

Kavka clearly chose the Ford Bronco and received her keys this week at the special event.

“Congratulations to Jodie. We’re thrilled to help her celebrate her big win and make sure that she has the keys to her new vehicle in time for the holiday season,” said Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne. “It’s loyal players like Jodie who help the Pennsylvania Lottery continue supporting programs for older Pennsylvanians that make a real difference all across Pennsylvania.”

In addition, Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko said, “Our retailers are always revved up and ready to go when it comes to selling our lottery products. We are immensely grateful for our network of nearly 10,000 licensed lottery retailers, including partners like GetGo. Together, we’re dedicated to meeting the needs of our players while generating vital funding that supports our older population every day.”

A winning ticket to a fresh start

For many people, winning the lottery is more than just a lucky break — it’s a lifeline, giving them a chance to rebuild and reimagine their lives. Stories like Kavka’s help highlight how these lottery wins can transform lives in unexpected and meaningful ways.

Not only did Kavka’s win solve her transportation worries, but it also brought relief during a financially challenging time. For people facing economic hardship, these lottery wins can give them a rare opportunity to climb out of financial struggles.

By getting a sudden influx of resources — whether it’s cash, a vehicle, or another significant prize — it can alleviate burdens like debt, unreliable transportation, or housing instability.

In addition, state lotteries often contribute to the broader mission of uplifting communities, whether it’s funding critical programs for older citizens or giving money to help students with scholarships or grants. While not everyone can win the grand prize, the money generated through lottery ticket sales ripples outward, supporting essential services that help those in need across the country. Each lottery ticket purchased carries the potential to create change — not just for winners, but for society as a whole.

Enjoy playing the Pennsylvania Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
