After 50 years of gambling and dreaming of a life-changing win, one South Carolina man finally got his payoff. What started as a hobby turned into a half-century quest for luck, and his persistence finally earned him a $100,000 reward, proving that sometimes patience and a little fortune really do pay off.

A refund 50 years in the making

A McConnells man has been gambling for 50 years, but has no big wins to show for it. However, his recent $100,000 win playing Powerball for the South Carolina Lottery may have evened everything out for him.

The lucky winner joked with lottery officials, “I feel like I got my money back. Really, it came right on time.”

While it may have taken 50 years for the big win, the McConnells man is glad it happened. Persistence definitely paid off for him, but the big win and breaking even aren’t stopping him.

“It was certainly an experience,” he told lottery officials. “And yeah, I’m still playing.”

Big win for the lottery retailer, also

The winning ticket was a Quick Pick ticket purchased at Texaco Express, located at 4186 Chester Hwy. in McConnells. He matched four of the five winning white ball numbers plus the Powerball during the August 20, 2025, drawing.

For selling the winning ticket, the Texaco Express was rewarded with a $1,000 bonus check from the state lottery.

The odds are not in your favor

Winning any lottery prize is always a long shot. Powerball is no exception. Matching four out of the five winning white ball numbers plus the red Powerball has odds of 1 in 913,129.

Those odds are roughly the same as a person being struck by lightning twice in their lifetime.

While these odds may seem daunting, getting smaller wins along the way is part of the game for millions of players who keep trying week after week.

Quick Pick tickets, lucky numbers, and careful number tracking all add to the thrill. Every ticket has a chance, while it may be slim, to change someone’s life, just like it did for this McConnells man.

Persistence paid off for this lucky winner

If there is any group of people who are built on persistence, it’s got to be lottery players. Some players may buy a ticket every week, hoping to hit that life-changing jackpot.

At the same time, others may follow a pattern of lucky numbers passed down through generations. Others may join an office lottery pool. Regardless of the way they are doing it, players will keep trying, motivated by hope and the dreams of winning big.

This Powerball win in South Carolina is a perfect example: 50 years of gambling finally rewarded this McConnells man. Yet, he’s far from done.

He will continue playing, which shows the dedication these players nationwide have. They know that persistence, patience, and a little luck can all eventually pay off.

Enjoy playing the South Carolina Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
