About the District of Columbia Lottery
The District of Columbia Lottery was launched in 1982 and saw immediate success, making $3.5 million in ticket sales during its first week. This quickly established it as a significant revenue generator for the nation's capital.
The District of Columbia was one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery Association, which launched its cooperative lottery games in the late 1980s. This partnership allowed DC residents to participate in games with larger prize pools shared across multiple jurisdictions. The district later expanded its multi-state offerings to include additional major lottery games.
Since its inception, the District of Columbia Lottery has contributed to the district's general fund, which provides for numerous essential city services, including education, parks, and housing. The lottery has been a consistent funding source for these services since its inception, helping to enhance the quality of life for District of Columbia residents while providing entertainment and the chance to win prizes.
