Time to celebrate another Powerball jackpot win, this time for a lucky Florida ticket holder!
The winning ticket
A single ticket sold in Florida matched all six numbers drawn last night to win the jackpot worth $214.9 million. The winning ticket was purchased at Publix, located at 9050 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Shores.
The winning white ball numbers for the May 6 drawing were 7, 23, 24, 56, and 60, and the red Powerball was 25. The Power Play multiplier was 2X.
While the jackpot-winning Powerball ticket was sold in Florida, the identity of the winner remains a mystery. When they do claim their prize, they have the option of receiving the winnings in 30 annual installments or as a one-time, lump-sum cash option of $100.1 million. Both of those prize options are before taxes.
For selling the winning ticket, Publix will receive a $100,000 bonus commission.
Big wins throughout the country
While the jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Florida, participating lotteries are reminding players to check their tickets for one of the nine other ways to win.
Throughout the country, the Powerball drawing on May 6 produced 385,220 winning tickets! There was a ticket in Idaho that matched all five white balls and increased their winnings from $1 million to $2 million by choosing the Power Play option for $1 more.
Powerball officials also announced that there were six tickets that won $50,000 prizes and seven tickets that won $100,000 prizes.
Third big win this year
The Powerball jackpot win on May 6 was the third time this year that the jackpot has been hit. The previous Powerball jackpot winner was exactly one month ago, on April 6 in Oregon, by a ticket that won a $1.3 billion jackpot.
That winning ticket turned into a winning trio after Cheng “Charlie” Saephan, 46, purchased the ticket and was the only person in the country to match all of the winning numbers and the Powerball.
After claiming the winnings, Saephan told Lottery officials that he was sharing the prize with his 37-year-old wife, Duanpen Saephan, and friend Laiza Chao, 55. The trio chose to split the prize among the three of them: 50% for Chao and 25% for both of the Saephans. All three of them choose the cash option, which totals $422.3 million after taxes.
Powerball in Florida
Florida joined Powerball in 2009. Since joining, the game has generated more than $2.9 billion in contributions to education statewide. The state also happens to be one of the top-selling Powerball states in the country, with more than 137.1 million winning tickets totaling more than $3.74 billion in prizes, including 16 jackpot winners since 2009.
About the Florida Lottery
Besides those contributions from the Powerball game, the Florida Lottery is also responsible for contributing more than $46 billion to enhance education and send almost one million students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
Since 1988, Florida Lottery games have paid more than $94.2 billion in prizes and made more than 4,000 people millionaires.
