Why was there a delay in last night's Powerball drawing?

The numbers appeared roughly 50 minutes later than usual, after an 'issue' caused the delay.

If you are a regular Powerball player and went to tune in to the draw for the winning numbers on Monday night, you may have noticed a delay in the process. The Monday, March 9, 2026, Powerball drawing was scheduled to be held at 10:59 p.m. ET, which is the normal timeslot for this drawing. However, the drawing was postponed for about 50 minutes, but why?

What caused the delay?

It seems that there was an “issue” while they attempted to hold the drawing. The drawing was eventually held and posted online about 50 minutes after it was supposed to initially be done.

During that original live broadcast of the drawing, Powerball host Laura Johnson let viewers know that the drawing was not going to be held as planned.

Johnson stated:

We are unable to bring the Powerball drawing at this time. As soon as we are able to resolve the issue and conduct the drawing, it will be available for viewing...

She went on to state that official game rules for Powerball require the drawing to be delayed until all procedures are properly completed.

Johnson explained:

Our rules require the drawing be delayed until we can ensure that all game procedures have been successfully completed.

Lottery officials uploaded the drawing to the Powerball YouTube channel around 11:50 p.m. ET. This allowed players to see the final results.

Is this normal?

No, this isn't a normal occurrence for Powerball drawings. The delays are rare, as lottery officials said the integrity of the drawing always comes first, so if a delay is needed, they will take it.

Before a drawing takes place, there are several security and verification steps completed. These include:

  • Confirming ticket sales from participating lottery retailers.
  • Verifying the equipment.
  • Ensuring the drawing process meets strict operational standards.

If any of these steps can't be confirmed or finalized before the drawing is to be held, then the drawing will be temporarily postponed until all the verification steps are completed.

Powerball drawing details

Once the issue above was resolved, the drawing was held, and the winning numbers were revealed. The winning white ball numbers for the March 9 drawing were 22, 23, 28, 36, and 54, and the Powerball number was 13 with a Power Play of 3X.

The estimated jackpot for last night's drawing was $46, with a cash option of $21.2 million.

The jackpot recently reset after a ticket purchased in Arkansas matched all six of the winning numbers to win the $250.8 million jackpot on March 2. Drawings for Powerball take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. ET. That means the next drawing will take place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

There were no jackpot winners in last night's drawing. The estimated jackpot for that next drawing is $58 million, with a cash option of $26.8 million.

Enjoy playing the lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
