Luck struck big time this weekend as Powerball players watched history unfold. With the jackpot soaring into record territory, millions tuned in to see if their numbers might deliver life-changing news.

By the end of the night, not only had the prize climbed to the second-largest Powerball jackpot in the game's history, but a pair of lucky tickets finally brought the epic run to a close, setting off celebrations in more ways than one.

Second-largest jackpot ever

The Powerball jackpot grew to $1.79 billion for the Saturday, September 6, 2025, drawing. This happens to be the second-biggest Powerball jackpot in the game's history.

After the winning numbers were drawn, lottery officials announced that two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, matched all six numbers to split the $1.79 billion jackpot.

The winning numbers for the September 6 drawing were white balls 11, 23, 44, 61, and 62, and Powerball 17. The Power Play multiplier was 2X.

Final ticket sales pushed the Powerball jackpot to $1.79 billion, making it the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won. The biggest Powerball jackpot was $2.04 billion, which was won by Edwin Castro in California on November 7, 2022.

For the Missouri ticket, lottery officials said they would announce where the winning ticket was sold within 72 hours of the drawing. In Texas, the winning ticket was purchased at Big's 103, located at 11905 E. U.S. Highway 290 in Fredericksburg.

Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a one-time lump sum payment of $410.3 million. Both prize options are before taxes. Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, stated:

Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winners and the Missouri Lottery and Texas Lottery for selling the winning tickets. Each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run gave players a chance at the prize, while also supporting vital public programs and services in their communities — and that's worth celebrating!

Almost 10 million winning tickets

In addition to the two jackpot-winning tickets being sold, lottery officials said there were over 9.9 million tickets sold that won cash prizes in Saturday's Powerball drawing.

Across the country, 18 tickets matched all five of the white balls drawn to win $1 million. Those winning tickets were sold in California (2), Colorado, Florida, Illinois (2), Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York (2), Ohio (2), Oregon, Texas (2), and West Virginia.

In addition, two tickets matched all five white balls drawn, but they also included the Power Play option. Their winnings increased to $2 million. Those tickets were sold in Kansas and Texas.

There were also 232 tickets that won $50,000 prizes (Match 4 + Powerball) and 90 tickets that won $100,000 prizes (Match 4 + Powerball + Power Play).

There were almost 10 million additional winning tickets sold, with prizes ranging from $4 for matching the Powerball up to $200 for matching four white balls.

Schools win too

While the jackpot run created many new millionaires along the way, it also created other winners: public schools.

This latest Powerball jackpot run started back on June 2. There were 42 drawings before the winners were crowned on Saturday.

In Virginia alone, the sales of Powerball tickets during this jackpot run generated an estimated $29.6 million in profit. By law, all of that profit goes to K-12 public education in the state, so it's a big win for public schools also.

The Powerball jackpot now resets to $20 million for the next drawing on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Enjoy playing the lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
