It was a holiday weekend, and someone's holiday went really well in California, as one lucky Powerball player won over $1 million!

The winning ticket

The winning Powerball ticket was purchased for Saturday night's drawing, August 31, in Northern California. With the win, the lucky player got an impressive payday of $1.18 million.

The winning white ball numbers for the August 31 drawing were 4, 34, 35, 38, and 69, and the Powerball number was 19.

The winning ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers but missed the Powerball and a chance at winning the jackpot of $69 million.

The lucky player purchased the winning ticket at Romey's Liquor Store, located at 9 Main St STE 105 in Woodland.

Jackpot continues to grow

No one matched all six of the winning numbers on Saturday, so the jackpot grew to $80 million for Monday's drawing (September 2, 2024). The winning white ball numbers for that drawing were 8, 42, 46, 48, and 53, and the Powerball number was 22.

Lottery officials announced the top prize won in California for this draw was $17,012, for one lucky player matched four of the white ball numbers and the Powerball.

Powerball is a multi-state lottery, and no one won the jackpot again. That means the estimated jackpot for Wednesday's drawing (September 4, 2024) is $93 million.

No lottery taxes in California

For this lucky winner, they should keep in mind that the federal government will take 24 percent of any lottery winnings worth $5,000 or more. This tax is withheld before any money is paid out to the winner.

California isn't the only state that doesn't tax lottery winnings. The other states are Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

Millions about to go unclaimed

While this new Powerball winner still has some time to claim their winnings, another lucky winner is about to lose out on their millions!

Lottery officials announced a Powerball winning ticket worth $2.46 million is about to expire. The winning ticket must be claimed by Thursday, September 19.

The winning ticket was purchased at 7-Eleven, located at 12500 Roscoe Boulevard in Sun Valley, for the March 23 drawing. The winning white ball numbers for that drawing were 6, 23, 25, 34, and 51, and the Powerball number was 3.

This lucky winner happened to match all five of the winning white ball numbers but missed out on the Powerball number. With that, they scored a $2.46 million prize that is about to expire.

Any lottery winners in California have 180 days from the draw date to claim their prizes. Otherwise, if no one claims the winning ticket, then that prize money will go to public schools in California.

Since ticket sales began in California in 1985, there have been more than $1.1 billion in unclaimed prize money. That unclaimed prize money is contributed to the state's public education system.
