Multiple Pick 5 tickets earn Bethesda man a $250,000 windfall

A lucky Maryland man played the same number five times for a Pick 5 drawing in May and ended up walking away with $250,000!

For the May 16 midday Pick 5 drawing, an anonymous player from Montgomery County ended up with the same number on five different tickets. While Maryland Lottery officials are wondering if it was a mistake or intentional to play the same number five times, the player is just celebrating winning a total of $250,000 in prizes.

The winning number for that May 16 midday drawing was 7-3-1-9-5. The Bethesda resident played two $1 straight bets on each of the five tickets for the May 16 midday and evening drawings, using 73195 for his lucky number. While it came up for the midday drawing, the winning number for the evening drawing was 7-7-4-7-7.

In total, the lucky winner scored a total of $250,000 in prizes. He purchased the winning tickets from the Giant grocery store, located at 7142 Arlington Road in Bethesda. For selling the winning tickets, the grocery store will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for each winning ticket, so a total bonus of $2,500.

Other lucky Pick 5 winners

While it is exciting times for this anonymous player, he hasn't been the biggest Pick 5 winner in Maryland this year. A Hyattsville man won $300,000 playing Pick 5 in May, Lottery officials said.

In March of this year, a Manchester man also won $250,000 playing Pick 5. The game began in Maryland in 2022 and since then, the largest Pick 5 prizes claimed on multiple tickets were $1 million, $750,000, and $550,000.

Construction worker claims Multi-Match jackpot

In other winning news from the Maryland Lottery, a resident of Prince George's County got a nice surprise after leaving work when he found out he won the $580,000 estimated jackpot in the May 30 Multi-Match drawing.

On June 7, the construction worker shared his story with Maryland Lottery officials, saying he was leaving the job site when he decided to check his lottery tickets using the mobile phone app. He scanned his Multi-Match ticket and found out he had matched all six winning numbers for the May 30 drawing, which were 3, 5, 21, 31, 32, and 34.

The Adelphi resident won the jackpot and decided to take the cash option. He told Lottery officials, “I said, 'Wow!' I was very surprised.” He wasn't quite sure how he was going to spend his winnings yet, but he did say he planned on still playing Multi-Match.

He purchased his winning ticket at the Adelphia Wawa, located at 9100 Riggs Road in Prince George's County. For selling a jackpot-winning Multi-Match ticket of $500,000 to $1 million, the lottery retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus check from the Maryland Lottery.
