The Mega Millions fervor continues.

As of September 3, 2024, the estimated jackpot has climbed to an incredible $681 million. This astronomical sum could change a life forever.

The excitement is building as players from across the country eagerly purchase tickets, hoping to nab the enormous prize. The jackpot has been growing steadily since the last winning ticket was drawn, and it's now one of the largest in Mega Millions history.

A September surprise

September has proven to be a lucky month for Mega Millions players. Since the game began in 2002, there have been a total of 22 jackpot winners in this month alone.

The largest September jackpot was won in New York in 2021, amounting to $431 million.

Previous big winners

While the current jackpot is substantial, it pales in comparison to some of the largest Mega Millions prizes ever won. Here are a few of the top winners:

  1. Florida's record-breaking jackpot: In August 2023, a lucky ticket holder in Florida claimed the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever, worth a staggering $1.602 billion. The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, opted for the lump sum payment of $794.2 million.
  2. South Carolina's surprise winner: In 2018, a single ticket sold in South Carolina won the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot, worth $1.537 billion. The winner, who also chose to remain anonymous, claimed the prize in March 2019.
  3. A Maine man's lucky streak: In 2023, a man from Maine won the third-largest Mega Millions jackpot, worth $1.348 billion. The lucky winner claimed the prize in a single lump sum.
  4. Illinois' lucky lottery player: In 2022, a lucky Illinois resident claimed the fourth-largest Mega Millions jackpot, worth $1.337 billion. The winner chose to remain anonymous and opted for the lump sum payment.

How to play

To participate in the Mega Millions lottery, you must purchase a ticket from an authorized retailer in one of the participating states. Tickets cost $2 each, and you can also add the Megaplier for an extra $1 to increase your potential winnings.

The drawing takes place every Tuesday and Friday evening at 11 p.m. ET. To win the jackpot, you must match all five main numbers and the Mega Ball.

More tips for Mega Millions players

  • Choose your numbers wisely: While there's no guaranteed strategy for winning, some players prefer to use birthdays, anniversaries, or lucky numbers. Others opt for quick picks generated by the lottery system.
  • Consider a lottery pool: Joining a lottery pool can increase your chances of winning while sharing the potential prize with others.
  • Check your tickets carefully: After each drawing, make sure to check your tickets thoroughly to see if you've won a prize.
  • Set a budget and stick to it: It's important to gamble responsibly and set a budget for your lottery purchases.

Whether you're a seasoned lottery player or a first-time participant, the Mega Millions jackpot offers an incredible opportunity to change your life. With the current jackpot at a record-breaking high, now is the time to dream big and try your luck.
