All grandmothers love their grandchildren, but this North Carolina grandmother might have a little more love for her grandkids than other grandmas out there!

Family vacation turns into a jackpot win

Winterville resident Claudette Cox recently got back from a family vacation. The vacation inspired her to play her grandchildren's birthdays as her Cash 5 numbers. It turned out to be a pretty good decision, as she ended up winning the $569,347 jackpot!

Cox recently went to Lottery headquarters to claim her prize. She told officials:

We had just gone on vacation together as a family and had such a great time, so I just decided to use their birthdays for my numbers.

The winning ticket

Cox's $1 winning ticket was for the June 15 drawing. The winning Cash 5 numbers for that June 15 drawing were 6, 7, 8, 23, and 24.

She bought her winning ticket from Harris Teeter, located at 2120 East Fire Tower Road in Greenville. Cox then proceeded to watch the Cash 5 drawing live to see if she won.

When she saw her numbers come up, she said she “started to run around the house” and was pinching herself because she couldn't believe it was really happening to her.

Cox claimed her winnings at North Carolina Lottery Headquarters on July 8 in Raleigh. After the required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $407,084. She told officials she still hasn't decided how to spend her winnings, but she will be putting some of it in the bank.

The Cash 5 jackpot for tonight's July 8 drawing is $242,000.

Big second chance winner

The North Carolina Lottery headquarters were handing out some big prizes today as another big winner stopped by to pick up his check.

William Wood of Charleston, South Carolina, entered his name into a second-chance drawing, and luck was on his side, as his name was drawn and he won a $500,000 prize.

The $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawing was held on Wednesday, July 3, and Wood found out his name was picked after receiving an email from the lottery. That had to be an exciting email to open. Luck was definitely on his side, though, as there were more than 1.9 million entries in the drawing, and he came out on top.

Wood claimed his winnings at North Carolina Lottery Headquarters on Monday, July 8. After the required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $357,500.

For those interested in this second-chance drawing, players get a second chance with their $10 Million Spectacular tickets. Players can scan their tickets into their lottery accounts using the state lottery app. Once scanned, they will automatically be entered into the drawing.

Wood won the prize in the second of four $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawings. The next drawing will be held on March 5.
