Someone in the Big Apple is kicking off the new year with a life-changing jackpot! A lucky New York City lottery player struck gold in Wednesday's New York LOTTO drawing, turning a $1 ticket into an incredible $3 million prize.

The winning ticket was sold at a Manhattan spot that just might become the city's new go-to for good fortune. Could you be the lucky person holding onto this winning ticket?

The jackpot-winning numbers

The New York Lottery announced that one lucky ticket matched all of the winning numbers during the Wednesday, January 8, New York LOTTO drawing to win the jackpot. That jackpot stood at $3 million for the night.

The winning numbers for last night's drawing were 4, 14, 22, 36, 42, and 57, and the Bonus Number was 30. To win the New York LOTTO jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn from a field of 1 to 59.

The winning ticket was purchased at Players Cafe, located at 241 Bleecker Street in Manhattan.

If you are holding onto this winning LOTTO ticket, you have up to one year from the date of the drawing to claim your prize.

More millionaires crowned in New York

The New York Lottery recently handed out some $1 million checks to players. Maria Frank and Martin Pederson, both of Manhattan, recently claimed their second prize from the Mega Millions drawing held on September 24, 2024.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 1, 6, 10, 23, and 27, and the Mega Ball was 18. The winning ticket was purchased at Ali NY Convenience, located at 1504 1st Ave. in Manhattan.

Frank and Pederson each claimed 50 percent of the $1 million winnings, so they each received a one-time lump sum payment of $306,120 after the required withholdings.

Another New York Lottery player had some luck recently playing one of the lottery's scratch-off games. Thomas Misercola of Watertown tried his luck at the Xtreme Winnings scratch-off game and took home one of the game's top prizes of $1 million.

After the required withholdings, Misercola received a single lump sum payment of $468,720. Misercola purchased the winning ticket at Kinney Drugs, located at 905 Coffeen St. in Watertown.

With Misercola claiming this top-prize winning ticket, lottery officials said there was still one top prize remaining for the Xtreme Winnings tickets.

North America's most profitable lottery

The New York Lottery debuted in 1967 and serves as the state-operated lottery system in New York. It operates under the New York State Gaming Commission and is headquartered in Schenectady.

Funds from the New York Lottery are used to help fund public education. The New York Lottery continues to be the largest and most profitable lottery in North America. In fiscal year 2023-2024, it contributed $3.8 billion to benefit public schools in the state.

When looking at specific games, New York's Mega Millions game generated $441.2 million in total sales during FY 23-24. Compare that to $4.4 billion in total sales during the same fiscal year for scratch-off games for the state.

Enjoy playing the New York Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
