While no one won the Powerball jackpot in last night's drawing, one lucky ticket holder in Michigan won $1 million. Is it you?

The winning ticket

For the May 8 drawing, the winning white ball numbers were 7, 41, 43, 45, and 51, and the Powerball number was 5. The winning ticket from Michigan matched all five white balls but missed the Powerball number to win $1 million.

According to the Michigan Lottery, the winning ticket was purchased at Forward Marathon, located at 511 S. Mable St. in Pinconning.

Now, the lucky Pinconning winner has one year to claim the $1 million prize before the winning ticket expires.

Other Michigan winners

The Powerball jackpot for May 8 was $20 million, but it now increases to $36 million for the next drawing on Saturday night since no one matched all of the numbers.

In addition to the $1 million winner, there were more Powerball winners in Michigan. Lottery officials said there were 354,446 tickets sold in the state that won at least $4 in the drawing.

Breakdown of Michigan Lottery revenue distribution

There are many people and businesses that benefit from the Michigan Lottery. While this lucky Powerball winner will be claiming their $1 million prize soon enough, there are other winners who benefit from the lottery.

The money from every lottery purchase in Michigan is used to help K-12 education, local businesses, and companies that employ Michigan residents. During fiscal year 2023, the Michigan Lottery contributed over $1.3 billion to the state of Michigan School Aid Fund.

To give you an idea of who exactly benefits from the money players spend on lottery tickets, we are breaking down where the money spent on the lottery in Michigan went for FY23. To do so, the Lottery shared the breakdown for every $1 spent:

  • 61 cents went to prizes for winners.
  • 27 cents went to the School Aid Fund to benefit K-12 public education.
  • 9 cents went to retailer and vendor commissions for selling those winning tickets.
  • 3 cents funded lottery operations to keep everything running smoothly for the Lottery office.

In Michigan, there are about 10,500 businesses throughout the state that earn those retailer and vendor commissions on the sale of lottery products as licensed retailers. Over the last 10 years, the Lottery has handed out more than $2.8 billion in sales commissions and bonuses to these retailers.

Speaking of winners

Those bonuses and sales commissions are handed out to retailers for selling winning tickets to players. For FY23, the Michigan Lottery paid out over $3 billion in prizes to players!

To break it down, there were 53 millionaire prize winners during that time. There were also almost 117 million winning tickets sold. Each day during that year, the state was handing out an average of $8.2 million in prizes.

The Lottery started in 1972 in Michigan, and since that time, they have awarded more than $52 billion in prizes. The biggest contributor to that number is the $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot winner in January 2021.

Enjoy playing the Michigan Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
