An Illinois Lottery player headed to the grocery store to pick up a few things — one of those things wasn't $1 million, but it happened after the lucky lady won with a Lucky Day Lotto ticket.

Grocery store visit pays off

The big winner purchased the jackpot-winning ticket at Jewel-Osco, located at 153 Schiller Street in Elmhurst. The ticket was for the Sunday, October 20, 2024, Lucky Day Lotto evening drawing.

The lucky winner, who chose to remain anonymous, told lottery officials:

While on my way to visit my aunt, I made a quick stop at Jewel to pick up a few groceries, and before heading out the door, I grabbed a quick pick Lucky Day Lotto ticket. I actually put the ticket in my purse and forgot all about it.

The winning numbers for that October 20 evening draw were 2, 3, 24, 25, and 28. The quick pick ticket matched all five of the winning numbers to win the $1 million jackpot prize.

'I instantly started crying'

It may have taken the winner a couple of days to discover she was a big winner, but she was shocked when she finally made the discovery.

The Lucky Day Lotto winner told officials:

A couple of days after the drawing, I saw the ticket in my purse and opened my lottery app to scan my ticket and check if it was a winner. I immediately saw '$1,000,000' on the screen, and I was in total shock. I scanned the ticket one more time to double-check, and when it showed '$1,000,000’'again, I instantly started crying. I thought, 'This is unbelievable.

Now that she has claimed her winnings, she told lottery officials she is looking forward to being able to afford annual trips to her favorite place in the world – Ireland. She said, “The landscape is stunning, and I'm thrilled that I can now look forward to these trips every year.”
