In the same shopping trip, a person in Indiana can now pick up a prescription, grab a few household essentials, and buy a lottery ticket. The Hoosier Lottery has announced a new partnership with Walgreens, bringing lottery games to nearly all of the pharmacy chain's locations throughout the state.

This is a first for both sides, as Walgreens has never partnered with a state lottery before. For lottery players in Indiana, this means they have another convenient place to pick up their favorite games, like Hoosier Lotto or Millionaire for Life, without having to make an extra stop. And this might not be the only change coming to Walgreens stores.

Lottery tickets are now on the Walgreens shopping list

With this new partnership, customers can buy Hoosier Lottery products at any participating Walgreens location across the state.

Players will have three types of lottery games to choose from:

  • Scratch-offs: Instant-win tickets that let players find out whether they've won right away.
  • Draw games: Games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and other Hoosier Lottery drawings.
  • Fast Play: Games that offer a chance to win instantly without scratching a ticket or waiting for a drawing.

This expansion into Walgreens stores gives players another option for buying tickets, especially for those players who already might be picking up their prescription. Now they won’t have to make an extra stop on their way home to get a lottery ticket for this week’s Powerball drawing.

A first for Walgreens and state lotteries

Yes, lottery players have long been able to buy tickets at convenience stores, supermarkets, and other retailers. However, this new partnership with Walgreens marks a new step.

Indiana is the first state where the pharmacy chain has entered into an agreement with a state lottery.

In a press release, Sarah M. Taylor, Executive Director of the Hoosier Lottery, stated:

Expanding into Walgreens locations represents an exciting milestone for Hoosier Lottery and increases convenience for players across Indiana.

Taylor added that this partnership will help the lottery reach more Indiana residents while continuing its mission of generating revenue for the state in a socially responsible manner.

For Walgreens, the agreement gives customers another reason to visit its stores while expanding the products available during everyday shopping trips.

Could more lottery promotions be coming?

Lottery ticket sales might just be the start of this partnership.

According to the announcement, Walgreens and the Hoosier Lottery are also looking into opportunities for future promotional events at select stores. This could include special in-store events designed to get customers more involved with the lottery.

However, they didn’t announce any specific promotions or dates as part of the rollout. Players should keep an eye out for any upcoming events on the lottery’s official events page.

What should Indiana lottery players know?

The biggest change for players is simply having another place to buy tickets.

With almost all Indiana Walgreens locations participating, the expansion could make it easier for customers to buy their favorite games while completing other errands.

The announcement doesn’t indicate any changes to game prices, rules, or prizes. This is solely about convenience and giving players another spot to buy their tickets.

While Indiana is the first state to launch a Walgreens lottery partnership, there’s no word yet on whether similar agreements could eventually reach other states. For now, Hoosier Lottery players have one more item they can add to their Walgreens shopping list.

Enjoy playing the Hoosier Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
