Cumberland, Wisconsin, is a small town with a population of just 2,268 people. Despite its small size, its residents are proud of its golf course, Pioneer Village Museum, and cross-country ski slopes. And now, Cumberland has one more thing to be proud of.

The town is buzzing with excitement over its first $1 million Powerball winner. It also marks the first major lottery win in the state for 2024.

One happy lottery retailer

The winning ticket for the January 24 drawing was purchased at Cumberland Cenex on 2104 Carlone Street. The numbers for the drawing were 1, 5, 32, 50, 64, and Powerball number 8. The ticker matched all five of the white balls but missed the Powerball. Vernita Craine, the Cumberland Cenex store manager, said:

Our store has only been open three years, and this is our biggest win ever. We can't wait to find out who it is. Hopefully, someone local.

The Cumberland Cenex will receive a $20,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. This will go a long way to helping the community store.

The winner is announced

Vernita's wish came true; the $1 million winner was someone local. The Wisconsin Lottery interviewed the winner, whose name is John. He told them:

I checked my numbers and yelled to my wife, oh my God honey, you're not going to believe this!
