$1M wins run in the family for Massachusetts couple

Some families pass down recipes, others share traditions, but one Massachusetts couple seems to have inherited something even rarer: a knack for striking it rich. While most lottery players dream their whole lives of hitting a jackpot just once, this household has managed to do it not once, but twice.

Years apart, both husband and wife have each scratched their way to a seven-figure prize, turning their family's story into the kind of tale friends will be retelling for decades. It's not every day you find a couple who can compare notes on what it feels like to cash a million-dollar ticket, and the details of their wins show just how extraordinary their luck really is.

Luck runs in the family

A Massachusetts woman recently won $1 million playing the Massachusetts Lottery. As it turns out, she isn't the only lucky one in her family.

Back in 2016, her husband also won $1 million playing a scratch-off ticket from the Massachusetts Lottery. Twice the fun, and twice the big winnings for this East Bridgewater household.

Her big win

Megan Armstrong won her $1 million prize after purchasing the “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” instant ticket game from the Massachusetts State Lottery. Armstrong recently made her way to the lottery headquarters to claim her prize. She opted to receive the money in the form of a one-time payment of $650,000 (before taxes), officials said.

Now that she has the cash in hand, Armstrong told lottery officials that she plans on using her money toward some home repairs.

Armstrong purchased the winning ticket at Viking Liquors, located at 685 North Bedford St. in East Bridgewater. For selling the winning ticket, the lucky retailer will receive a $10,000 bonus from the state lottery.

His big win

Just seven short years ago, Megan's husband, Greg Armstrong, won $1 million on the “$2,000,000 50X Cashword” instant game. In 2016, lottery officials said Greg was the first $1 million winner for this particular scratch-off game.

At that time, Armstrong chose the cash option and received a one-time payment of $650,000 (before Taxes).

When talking with lottery officials, Armstrong said he and his fiancée were in the process of planning their wedding. Because of that, he was intending to use a portion of his winnings to pay for the wedding and to buy a house.

Greg purchased his winning ticket at R K Mart, located at 141 Broad St. in Weymouth. For selling the winning ticket, that lucky retailer also received a $10,000 bonus from the state lottery.

Other recent winners

While the Armstrongs have had their luck, they aren't the only big winners in the state. Another “$2,000,000 50X Cashword” ticket was purchased in Lawrence, and this lucky winner got $1.3 million.

A “BONUS 100X” scratch-off ticket purchased in Bourne happened to win $2.6 million. Add that to another $2.6 million winner in N. Andover, who purchased the “$4,000,000 Monopoly Doubler” scratch-off for their big win.

Enjoy playing the Massachusetts Lottery, and please remember to play responsibly.
