About the Texas Lottery
The Texas lottery announced its arrival in a big way, by selling 23.2 million scratch-off lotto tickets on the first day of sales on May 29, 1992. The arrival of the TX lottery was so popular that, on the night before tickets became available, tens of thousands of people attended lottery kick-off parties in various cities across the Lone Star State.
The sale of 23.2 million lottery tickets on May 29 became a world record for first day lottery ticket sales, with the first ever TX lottery ticket bought at 6 a.m. at Polk's Feed Store in Oak Hill, by Governor Ann Richards. The first day sales were so successful that the entire cost of starting up the lottery was earned back after just three hours of sales.
There are now TX lottery games to suit everyone, with daily lottos and huge jackpot weekly games all available in the state. Cash 5, Daily 4, Midday 4, Midday Pick 3, Pick 3 and Texas Two Step are just some of the games that are exclusive to the state's lottery players. Also available is the Texas Powerball and Texas Mega Millions. Texas Powerball tickets didn't become available until 31 January, 2010, whereas Texas Mega Millions has been playable in the state since December 5, 2003.
The TX lottery is also very keen to help its own and directs proceeds to the Foundation School Fund. The lottery slogan of: ‘When Texans Play, Texas Wins!' has certainly come true with more than $13 billion having been given to the school fund.
The lottery's selection of games and its role supporting the state's education system has meant that the TX lottery has continued to thrive and, in 1994, it was even named as the number one US lottery (based on sales figures). Of the TX lottery's selection of games, Lotto Texas has emerged as the largest and most popular. The right Lotto Texas results can change lives, with players receiving multi-million dollar jackpots if they have winning numbers on their tickets. Lotto Texas was introduced on November 7, 1992, with the first jackpot winner coming just 21 days later. The lucky jackpot winner was Janie Kallus from Schulenburg who won an impressive $21.8 million!
Lottery winners come in all shapes and sizes, some rich, some poor and some even already a celebrity in their own right. This was certainly the case when Thomas ‘Hollywood' Henderson checked the Lotto Texas results in March 2000 and found that he was the winner of a $28 million jackpot. Henderson was a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and had already been lucky enough to go to three Superbowls, winning one and playing in the 1978 Pro Bowl. However, Henderson had fallen on hard times, having lost almost all of his money following drug and alcohol problems, before winning the fantastic jackpot.
When discussing Texas lottery winners, it's hard not to mention Joan Ginther, originally from Bishop, a city in the Lone Star State. Ginther must go down as one of the most successful lottery players of all time, as she's won more than $1 million on the Texas lottery, an incredible four times! Her total winnings over the years amount to more than $20 million and date back to 1993, when she won $5.4 million in a Lotto Texas game.
These are just some of the winners that have received their share of the prizes from the Texas Lotto, a figure that stands at more than $5 billion! With a bit of luck, you could be a lottery winner too...
