About the Puerto Rico Lottery

The Puerto Rico Lottery doesn't always get the recognition that it deserves. The Loteria de Puerto Rico is actually the oldest modern US lottery, but because it isn't on the mainland it's often forgotten about. Many credit New Hampshire with the first modern US lottery but the Puerto Rico Lottery was actually around in 1934, 30 years before New Hampshire's lottery.

In order to stop this, the Puerto Rico lottery printed lottery numbers on the back of receipts in order to encourage consumers to demand receipts. Lottery prizes available to Costa Rica receipt holders include cash jackpots of up to $1,000 as well as a car which is given away following monthly drawings.
