When it comes to Maine Lottery games, it's really all about the multi-state lotteries. Although Maine does have their own lotteries in the form of Pick 3 and Pick 4, the big jackpots come from elsewhere. Of the multi-state games, the two biggest lotteries are Mega Millions and Powerball. They were added in July 1990 and July 2004 respectively and regularly offer multi-million dollar jackpots.
One of these came in 2007 when Venison Turner Jr. won $300,000. While this win isn't too special compared to other Powerball jackpots, it did cause some controversy. This is because rather than being presented to the media with a large fake check, Turner was photographed holding a real one that including his social security number and address on it. Fortunately no one used the details for any wrong doing but the ME lottery have been sure not to make that mistake again.
Also available in the Pine Tree State is Hot Lotto and the tri-state lotteries of Megabucks and Weekly Grand. Megabucks, and later Megabucks Plus, has been particularly popular with ME lottery players as there have been a number of jackpots handed out.
To highlight just how much is won in Maine, 2009 saw more than $131,496,677 go to players with winning numbers coming up every day. As with other state lotteries, the Maine Lottery is not run for profit, so all of the money made from it goes to various funds. These include the Maine General Fund and the Outdoor Heritage Fund amongst many others.
