About the Oklahoma Lottery

Having only been approved in 2003, the Oklahoma Lottery was one of the last states to begin selling lottery tickets when sales began on October 12, 2005.

But OK Lottery players were sure to make up for lost time with many queuing up at 5:00am to get their tickets on the first day of sales. After opening with a series of instant scratch-off lottery games, the Oklahoma Lottery had been running for just seven minutes before the first winner was produced – a $2 prize won in Enid.

That was the start of many as Oklahoma lottery players have received a number of big prizes during the state lottery's short history. OK lottery jackpots are so common that two even came on the same day in 2008 with Hot Lotto and Powerball jackpots landing in the state. Once the Oklahoma Lottery had been approved by voters, it was then decided what was to be done with the money made by the lottery. Then on November 2, 2004, Oklahomans voted to pass the Oklahoma Education Lottery Act which meant that proceeds would go to the state's education system. The profits made now go on library books, campus improvements, early childhood development, computers, text books and laboratory equipment amongst many other academic essentials. So not only do lottery players win but the Sooner State's, students do as well.
