About the Maryland Lottery

The Maryland (MD) lottery has been running since 1973 and now offers six single-state games, in addition to the two multi-state lotteries, Mega Millions and Powerball. Local lotteries available in Maryland include the 18 number Multi Match Lotto, Bonus Match 5, Midday Pick 3, Midday Pick 4, Pick 3 and Pick 4. These state-only games can offer multi-million dollar jackpots to players lucky enough to have winning MD lottery numbers.

In September 1996, Maryland became one of the first states to offer the Mega Millions lottery and this semi-weekly game continues to reward Maryland lottery winners with huge jackpots. Similarly, the Powerball lottery only became available to Maryland residents in January 2010, following an agreement between the Maryland and the Multi-State Lottery Association, which manages the Powerball lottery. The first Powerball draw in Maryland took place in February 2010, just a few months after Mega Millions and the state lottery association reached an agreement to add the game back in October 2009.

In 2010, $1.7 billion was spent on the Maryland lottery, with $510 million of this going to state funded programs such as education, public health, safety and the environment. Alongside this, more than $1 billion was awarded to Maryland lottery players, with $63 million given to Mega Millions winners.
