About the Kansas Lottery

As one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), the Kansas Lottery has played an important part in US lottery history. In fact, the KS Lottery had helped to form the MUSL before it even began selling lottery tickets for the first time when Up and Away tickets went on sale on November 12, 1987.

So it's no surprise that multi-state lotteries are very popular in Kansas with Powerball, Mega Millions, Hot Lotto and 2by2 all available in the state. Kansas Powerball in particular has proved a big hit thanks to a number of huge wins. One $15 million Powerball jackpot came on September 27, 2006 but the winner chose to remain anonymous with the Kansas Lottery being one of the few that allows winners to do so.

Another KS Powerball winner was Donald Damon from Great Bend who won an impressive $96.6 million from the November 11, 2009 drawing. Damon had received his winning numbers from a $1 Quick Pick ticket that he had bought at Dillons 51 in Great Bend and in doing so became the tenth Kansas Powerball jackpot winner.

But Powerball isn't the only multi-state lottery to have provided some big jackpots for Kansas lottery players. Before being branded Powerball, Lotto America created eight Kansan millionaires, while Hot Lotto has also weighed in with its fair share of million dollar jackpots.

After originally not proving too popular with Kansans, the KS Lottery's own games soon became a hit. Those currently on offer are the daily Kansas Pick 3 and Super Kansas Cash.

While the Super Kansas Cash jackpot may start a bit lower than the multi-state games on offer in the Sunflower State, it still regularly makes millionaires. One of these millionaires came in the form of Tamera Shuler who won more than $3,000,000. The win came from the December 4, 2006 Super Kansas Cash drawing with Shuler matching all six winning numbers. Shuler, from Topeka, had previously worked for the state but told reporters that she was going to quite her job after the big win.

As with most state lotteries, the Kansas Lottery makes annual transfers to the state fund so that a number of projects can be funded in order to help those around the state. As the lottery's popularity has increased so has the size of these transfers. Back in 1988 $11,343,321 was handed over which seems tiny compared to the $69 million that was transferred in 2010. So far, more than $1 billion in total has been given to the people of Kansas with juvenile detentions centers, economic development initiatives and many other projects benefiting.
